Copy Cat Design: Raul Martins' Library

Here's the lovely and talented Colleen with our next installment of Copy Cat Design. And it's a good one!


This little library by Raul Martins is chock full of great design ideas, so let's get started!


Replace the shades on this chandelier with black shades, to repeat the black and gold motif.

A grouping of crystal balls on a bookshelf looks ever so chic.

Look closely and you'll notice these shelves are industrial shelving units, topped with a black marble slab. Such an excellent storage solution!

Framed architectural sketches are so fitting for a library. Botanical diagrams would be lovely too.

More intriguing objects for a grouping!

I firmly believe a library shouldn't have too-comfy chairs, otherwise you end up snoozing more than reading. It's for your own good!

A book on which to place an obelisk.

You could buy a Tulip Table with a black marble top, but I actually prefer the contrast of the white table.

Here's another brilliant design trick: the wallpaper pattern mimics the one on the rug, but it's low contrast, allowing the rug to take center stage. Repetition: your design friend.

A high contrast geometric rug punctuates the repetition of black throughout the space.

Copy Cat Design: Caitlin Wilson's Dining Room

Colleen is on fire - I love seeing what she is up to on There Comes A Yes. Also, did you hear that she is now the head graphic designer for Lonny? She is so talented and I feel really lucky that she works with me! She's joining us today with a copy cat version of a room designed by another lovely friend, Caitlin Wilson. Here's Colleen:


I really love Caitlin Wilson's dining room in the July issue of Matchbook. It's a pretty mix of traditional and feminine pieces!


It's pink, but the shape isn't overtly girly, so it works well in a dining room.

A fresh, light wash of blue on the walls enhances the navies and pinks.

Chintz makes me happy. That's all.

A very traditional and formal chandelier--it's best paired with a mix of furniture styles.

To stuff with hydrangeas, of course.

Dress up a run-of-the-mill buffet with glam lucite knobs.

A basic sideboard perfect for customization.

Scour church garage sales, thrift stores, and fleas for a framed oil painting--you'll get the best deal!

Rarely can you go wrong with a vintage dining set. If you're searching Ebay or Craigslist, try adding "regency" to your search terms.

To get that Regency look, search for high back chairs and caning.

Upholster the dining chairs in a navy and white/cream stripe!

Use wing back chairs as host chairs--it breaks up the matchy-matchy look of a dining set.

Tie the room together perfectly with this floral fabric.

Copy Cat Design: Kate and Andy Spade's Living Room

If I could pick any apartment to move right in to, it would easily be Kate and Andy Spade's home. Traditional furniture with amazing modern art and lots of bright colors? Just perfection! I'm so glad Colleen (who is a busy little bee working on Lonny this week!) picked this room to reinterpret. I totally ordered the dinosaur puzzle. :)

Kate and Andy Spade’s apartment gets a ton of play in publications, and for good reason! They are experts at mixing color, pattern, and time periods in an elegant way.

1. Sabrina Table Lamp; Z Gallerie, $130
For a bit of sparkle.

2. Puzzled Triceratops; Amazon, $5
For me, one of the hallmarks of Kate Spade’s style is her nod to the playful. Her living room is fairly traditional, but there are playful moments, like an arrangement of dinosaurs.

3. Black and White Spotted Pillow Cover; Furbish Studio, $50
Adding a graphic print to traditional decor keeps the look from being staid.

4. Sofia Sofa; Ballard Designs, $1700
These Louis style sofas turn up on Craigslist from time to time too! Consider painting the frame black.

5. Stripe Linen; Decorator’s Best, $50
A good rule of thumb when picking upholstery fabric for a feminine furniture style like this sofa is to go masculine. Menswear-inspired fabrics and colors counteract the frou-frouness!

6. Truman Table Lamp in Sunflower; $145
I love these lamps for a sofa console.

7. Blue Junior Pillow; Jonathan Adler, $98
I’m from the Midwest (and was not in a sorority), so I never knew monograms were such a thing. I’m starting to get the fuss now!

8. Pale Powder Paint; Farrow & Ball
I’ve recently been turned on to Farrow & Ball colors. If you’re looking for an elegant shade, their selection is perfect. If I were to repaint my living room, this would be the color.

9. Lacquer Accent Table; Overstock, $244
Just a cute pedestal table!

10. “Rings” Print; Minted, $215 for 30”x40”
This room is a great illustration of how to use art as a starting place for a room’s colors, but not the definitive palette. Nuance is good.

11. Marie Arm Chair; Home Decorators, $380
Painted an off white, these would be great!

12. Driftwood Stripe; Decorators Best, $71/yard
Wide stripes are fabulous on side chairs.

13. Brinkley Pillow; Crate and Barrel, $20
A simple solid pillow.

14. Silk Pillow Cover in Poinsettia; West Elm, $10
For some extra sheen and color on the sofa.

Copy Cat Design: Feminine Bedroom

Colleen, who is offering eDecorating services now (!!), is back for another stunning Copy Cat post. This photo of the Oly Studio showroom at High Point was plastered allllll over Pinterest this week. Wouldn't you love to call this room yours? Here's Colleen:



Here's a showroom that made the rounds after High Point, and for good reason: it's spectacularly pretty! 


Since our interpretation doesn't include a stunning brass bed, bring in some brass accents for extra sparkle. I love these urchins because the echo the shape of the sunburst mirror in the space.

A few coral peonies in this milky-white vase would be plenty pretty on a nightstand.

Coral lamps fit right in with the tropical thrust of the room.

Not quite a showstopping brass canopy, but the lines are clean. Ikea used to carry a similar (and cheaper) canopy, so it might be worth tracking down on Craigslist.

A luxurious velvet for a bolster or euro shams.

Illustrations in the public domain are an excellent source for decorating, and this bird print works so well here! You can even enlarge the illustration with Wizard Prints. 

It's a bit of a challenge finding new gold-toned furniture, so I love these feminine tables.

A spindly starburst mirror adds some needed texture.

A pretty, cozy chair in a natural linen rounds out the furniture. (ed note: This chairs is super comfy and an unbelievably great price!!)

Add some color to the bed with a coral pink duvet or quilt!

Copy Cat Design: Chic, Modern Desk

Colleen, who may have suckered me into buying a gingham dress, is back in action today with another killer copy cat post! I loved this room from Adore too! PS Colleen mentions Pinterest in her round up. Thought I would mention she is one of my favorite Pinners around. Follow her here.



I have a confession. I really, really love office supplies. Walking into Container Store makes my knees buckle, and guys, I am not an organized person. So when I saw Claudia Stephenson's Sydney office area in Adore magazine, I was a little smitten. 


I love the glass ball lamp in the picture, but I'd settle for a lucite one too. Another option are these mini ball lamps--you get a pair for $220, which is quite the deal!

In my fantasy life, my pencils all match. The little things.

We should probably refrain from choosing bright pink for every storage container. Unless this is for a young girl, in which case I suggest you go wild. A simple, natural fiber storage basket adds just enough texture.

A little luxury for your workspace, that's it!

Stash receipts and other not-so-pretty but necessary things.

A little caveat: if you spend a significant amount of time at your desk, definitely invest in something more comfortable than a side chair. But plopping down for a little Pinterest session, I love this chair.

A place for the bits and bobs to live, like business cards.

Resist the temptation to buy a matching desk set and use non-office things, like votive holders, small vases, and drinking glasses, as pencil holders. 

I dig the small collection of vintage Penguin editions in the image. Popping into used book stores is one of my favorite things, and you can always find some cool-looking covers.

Pretty square scarves make excellent art. This office uses a Hermes scarf, but I'm a little partial to this Kate Spade pattern!

Ground all the color and slickness with a simple jute rug.

For an x-desk, I really like this one from Z Gallerie. But if you just want a simple white lacquer desk, nothing much beats the Parsons Desk from West Elm.

Copy Cat Design: Wallpaper in the Bedroom

Colleen's back at it with another great room, recreated for less! (PS We're getting ready for some trips this summer, and I'm DYING for this orange swim suit Colleen shared this week. So cute!)



This bedroom from Traditional Home is deceptive--at first it looks like it has a lot going on, but with the exception of statement-making wallpaper, it's a very neutral room. Let's take a closer look.



The skinny white lamp looks crisp against the cobalt wallpaper.


If you're fortunate enough to have a yard, bud vases are your very best friend for decorating. Add a few blooms from your yard and put them in every room.


This bed is such a find. Going neutral shouldn't mean boring, so pick something with interest, like tufting or a scrolling shape.


The original roman shades use a Kravet fabric, but I quite like a wide neutral stripe too.


The wallpaper is absolutely the star of the room, and the saturated color is key. This Chinoiserie pattern is an economical alternative to the original Osborne & Little.


If wallpapering isn't an option, this blue paint will look stunning with white trim.


Consider replacing the glass doors with mirrors--it's pretty and functional.


Crystal pulls will add a little sparkle to a plain white wardrobe.


The bedding repeats the blue in the embroidery, on otherwise bright white sheets.


Just a simple white table for pretty things.


I'm a tchotchke person. I need my pointless pretty objects, thus a blue ginger jar.


A feminine and neutral pillow completes the bed.

Copy Cat Design: Celerie Kemble Dining Room

I'm so thrilled you guys seem to love these copy cat posts from Colleen as much as I do! Colleen has the best eye and knows when to splurge and when to save. She also is a FANTASTIC flea market partner in crime. We always find gems together. My favorite find was these midcentury chrome and brass coffee tables for Colleen's living room. So gorgeous!!

I'm so excited to do this reader-requested Celerie Kemble dining room; I worked on the issue of Lonny in which it was featured! It was absolutely my favorite interior.


If this room were for a client, I'd trawl the flea market and Ebay for a vintage option, but I'm quite enjoying this new chandelier that nods to the original Murano. For a different but still lovely Murano-style look, try the Calais Chandelier from Z Gallerie.

Celerie used shagreen chairs of her own design in this room. Grey chairs with Mid-Century lines are still faithful to the look. Another option are these Klismos chairs from West Elm.

Complete the chairs with plush mohair in a chocolate hue.

I've been dreaming of this flatware for months now. It's on my "when I'm rich and fabulous" list. Target fortunately has an interpretation in stainless.

One of the Jonathan Adler decorating tips I've taken to heart is to replace your hardware with lucite. It's instant glamour!

To keep window treatments from being over the top, pair the lucite rod with linen drapes.

These ceramic artichokes would be cute on a mantel too.

The art in the room is by Alex Timchula, but framing wallpaper is a great option. You could also get botanical prints from Etsy.

Most lightly-stained farmhouse tables would do the trick here. Top with simple glass plates.

This pale peachy-pink evokes just enough glamour.

Spray paint the hardware a brass shade and you'd be good to go! For something a little more Regency, try this buffet from Home Decorator's.

Copy Cat Design: Lilly Bunn Weekes Living Room

It's Friday! My lovely assistant Colleen from There Comes A Yes is joining us for another round of Copy Cat Design. Lilly Bunn Weekes is an amazing NYC designer and just an all-round lovely person! She blogs at Lilly's Notebook. Here's Colleen's twist on her gorgeous work:


I adore Lilly Bunn Weekes' full-on commitment to color. She doesn't mess around. Color on the walls, color on the furniture--this is not wimpy stuff!



If you're feeling some trepidation over color or pattern, start with the baby step: a throw pillow. Pillows are gateway decor.


Grasscloth is a genius wallcovering. It works wonders for rooms without much architecture, but there's no pattern to potentially get sick of. Perfect!


A nice, simple brass lamp.


Another lamp option: get some crystal clusters, a lamp kit, and drill a hole through the clusters to fit a lamp pipe. DIY instructions here.


Ikea to the rescue for this sofa. Bemz has a range of slipcovers for this style, including an orange cotton.


Or have the couch upholstered in this lush orange velvet!


More purple ikat!


A bergere ready to be upholstered.


Lilly's chairs (and pillows) are done in Madeline Weinrib fabrics, which are spendy. This fabric is a brilliant alternative.


I like that the coffee table is architectural and not overly pretty--a counterpoint to all of the feminine elements.


With a coat of brown-black paint, this mirror is a dead ringer for the inspiration one!


Simple wood end tables, another smart juxtaposition.


A black and white rug for that punch of graphic pattern.
